Letter from Mr Chiswell

Dear Parent,

As we approach the end of the academic year, it is always a time for informed reflection. This year, there is a great deal to look back on.

The memory of the pre-lockdown school operations are becoming obscure but, in the forefront of my mind is the exceptional work of the school's staff in the continuing to serve all the children and families on role. I have been touched by the cards, messages and notes I have been sent. This amazing work, made even more remarkable despite having to work in teeth of this horrendous worldwide pandemic, which, however, you look, has hit the United Kingdom very hard. Parking their very real fears and anxieties, almost without exception, every one of the staff has stood tall and, selflessly put your children and your family first. Some dealing with personal tragedy have wiped away tears while signing in for work and quickly donning a smile as our key worker and vulnerable children walk through the door. A truly remarkable team.

Covid-19 has allowed our staff team to stand tall and show the borough what The Observatory School is all about. We have been as responsive as we can be amidst constantly changing advice.

Over the lockdown period, the Governors supported two large scale infrastructure projects. The new sports pitches and sensory, adventure playground. We are currently exploring a further large scale capital project to provide a new, state of the art sensory suite. I can’t wait to see the children enjoying these in the new academic year.

September will see the return of more normalised operations. We are planning for a full re-occupation of the school site, with all measures in place to reduce the risk of infection. Your full cooperation with those measures will be greatly appreciated.

Your child’s form tutor will be in touch to discuss this with you in the coming days. The new DFE guidance was issued late this week, so we have not yet updated our plans.

Miss Gower will shortly be writing to you to outline the curriculum intent in the Autumn term, and I will update you all on any changes to the operations before the end of the term.

Can I take this opportunity to wish you and your family’s well over the summer break and I look forward to seeing you all in the new academic year,

Best Wishes,

Greg Chiswell
